Manchester Chinatown lies in the very heart of the city, focused around Faulkner Street just behind the town hall. The area boasts superb restaurants, Oriental supermarkets, Chinese medicine shops and casinos.
It wasn't until the 1940s that the Chinese started to arrive in Manchester, with the first Chinese resturant being the Ping Hong in Mosley Street, opening in 1948.
By 1960 sixteen more restaurants were open and the boom continued well into the '70s. In 1962 the Willow Garden opened with a capacity of 600, followed later by Kwok Man (1972), Charlie Chan's (1973), the Woo Sang (1976) and probably the most famous Chinese restaurant in Europe, the Yang Sing (1978).
Whilst many restaurants are located around China Town in Manchester city centre, there's a huge choice of Chinese restaurants elsewhere in the city and the surrounding area.
Authentic Thai restaurant situated on the edge of Chinatown, just off Portland Street. Fusing authentic eastern ambience with colonial grandeur, subtle colours and a peaceful intimate atmosphere are offset with huge ornate pillars. The food is authentic and Thai cookery schools are also available.
Previously known as Obsidian, the restaurant below the Arora Hotel on the edge of Chinatown, with its highly-celebrated cocktail bar, serves honest, simple, seasonal, carefully sourced, reasonably priced British food with an emphasis on steaks, fresh fish and seafood. Opened October 2011
